| T# | NAME | TOOL LENGTH (H) |

Requires T17 Work Probe. Choose a cycle, then fill the fields below.
Park beside the face (below the top for X/Y). Signed distance is travel until trigger.
Jog near the corner (slightly outside and above). Four protected hits set corner X/Y and surface angles.
On a real mill, you enter an approximate tool length and the tool type so the control can choose the right automatic tool-length cycle and search range. Below is the info for the tool currently loaded (read-only in this sim). BEGIN measures true length H on the table setter.
This will home X Y Z, clear G54 and all H values, load T1, and clear any alarm. Part setup and challenges stay as they are.
Part, workholding, and challenges.
You've used all 3 grade checks for this challenge. It will now reset with a new part position — take your measurements again from the start. (You get 3 fresh checks. Tip: the moon-landing test is free; use it before grading.)
Everything on this page is exactly how a Haas vertical mill thinks about position. Keep it open, or print it. Colors match the 3D view: X red · Y green · Z blue · H yellow.
The work offset is the trip from machine home to your part zero — always negative on a Haas. Where the vice sits changes; the trip is what you measure.
| Method 1 (touch-off) | Method 2 (setter + probe) | |
|---|---|---|
| TLO | Touch each tool to the part top, press TOOL OFSET MESUR. TLO = machine Z at touch (big negative number). | Measure each tool on the tool setter. TLO = the tool's true length (positive number). |
| G54 Z | Stays 0.0000. | Probe the part top. G54 Z = machine position of the part top (big negative number). |
| Feel | Every tool knows the trip to the part personally. | Tools know only themselves; the offset knows the part. |
| Danger | Re-fixture the part → re-touch every tool. | Re-fixture → re-probe one number. |
| G53 | Machine coordinates: fixed, from machine home. |
| G54 | The first work offset. (G55–G59 work the same for more setups.) |
| TLO | Tool Length Offset: how the control corrects Z for each tool's length (H-code in a program). |
| DRO | Digital ReadOut: the position display. |
| Gauge line | Reference face of the spindle nose that tool lengths are measured from. |
| Zero return | Sending all axes back to machine home (G28). |
| Edge finder | Spinning .200″ tip that kicks sideways at contact with an edge. |
| Tool setter | Calibrated puck on the table that measures tool lengths automatically. |
